Doosan Škoda Power commissions one of the world’s largest single-body steam turbines with heating

Turbine manufacturer Doosan Škoda Power has successfully commissioned a 171 MW single-body steam turbine at the coal-fired Gummidipoondi Power Plant near Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The completion of this project puts Doosan Škoda Power amongst just a handful of manufacturers worldwide to successfully operate this turbine concept.

Commenting on the achievement, Jiří Šmondrk, CEO of Doosan Škoda Power, said: “Gummidipoondi provides an important reference project for us, allowing us to demonstrate the extent of our turbine design and manufacturing expertise. Successful completion of this major project further builds on the strong reputation enjoyed by Škoda steam turbines in the Indian power generation market.”

The Gummidipoondi contract was awarded to Doosan Škoda Power earlier this year by plant owner and operator OPG Power Generation Private Limited. The turbine was supplied as part of a complete machine hall package, including assembly.

The Czech Republic-based turbine manufacturer has continued to overcome strong competition in India, securing a number of high-profile projects in recent years, including the modernisation of a 210 MW turbine for the Bandel coal power plant and the supply and installation of a 127 MW steam turbine for the Pioneer steam and gas power plant.
